Coloring Book Contest Winners

The A Walk in Eden book release and coloring party last Saturday was a huge success. Before we were even ready to let people in we had curious people peering in the windows watching us set up. Within about 15 minutes of opening the doors every table was full and it stayed that way for almost all four hours. Several people remarked that it was a welcome diversion from the week's events, and I can certainly say that was true for myself. We had kids as young as three, at least one woman in her 70's, and everything in between. We even had some actual professional cartoonists in attendance. But officially the event was a contest, so here are some of my favorite pages, the official runner-up and, lastly, the winner.

Love the way the horse is colored, here. At the top of the sheet the colorist wrote a title: Piebald Sea Dragon at Home. 

Sarah Glidden drew Fran Lopez having a psychedelic bubble gum monster attack fever dream. She also drew some stuff in the margins that isn't quite safe for work, so don't ask.

Apparently there was a flying saucer theme.

Love the overall feeling of this. I think it's the sky that nails it.

Runner-up: I was especially stoked on the duotone treatment here. I appreciate the conceptual rigor. This one stands out as completely unique, so I have to give it runner-up. 

Grand Prize: Weirdly, Fran Lopez insisted multiple times that he was no good at coloring. But if there was a place that looked like that I would live there. Most of Fran's comics don't look like this, but they're pretty great. You should check them out. Thanks Fran, and thanks to everyone else who came out and colored.

A bunch of originals from the book are currently available in my webstore as is a hand-bound accordion book that weaves together twelve pages of the book in one continuous landscape.
